This iconic portrait of David Bowie was like any other making project i had done before, originally I was asked to make it as a commission, but I ended up making two slightly different versions, with this being the more complicated of the two.
 
Working out how to acheive this end result was actually quite complicated. I had to start with a sketch which I then worked up to a digital design pattern, from this pattern I created a colour specification sheet working out which colours of leather could be used in which places. Overall there was 25 different colours of leathers used in its creation.

With the pattern created each piece had to be cut out by hand with a scalpel and carefully assembled making sure that I still captured the essence of David Bowie. with the assembly of the pieces glued into place it was over to the sewing machine for the huge task of stitch round each piece carefully making sure the whole  image didn’t move too much. 
 
Once completely stitched the portrait was then added to a piece of soft white lambs leather and then stretched over an artists canvas, waiting to be hung in situ and enjoyed.
