I woke up one morning about 5:30 and an image of coastal shells, starfish and pebbles on a bed of coral and seaweed popped into my head. I was really excited with the idea of making a necklace that looked like what I had just visualised.  
 
I struggled for a while trying to figure out how to make it. I wanted it to be three-dimensional and look like it had just been washed up on a beach, I also wanted to create layers within the necklace with overlapping, seaweed and coral. My vision was that I wanted it to be the sort of necklace you could imagine on a mermaid, a striking piece created from items she would have picked from the sea floor and draped around her neck. 
 
This is really a piece of wearable art, so at the moment I have only made one due to the time it has taken to make its many elements. The coral background was particularly fiddly and took nearly 3 hours to cut out and stitch. 
 
Each piece of leather is cut by hand and meticulously fitted together using my unique leather marquetry technique. Once all the leather pieces are assembled, I stitch them together using my trusty companion, 'Gerty', a 1960's Pfaff rolling-foot sewing machine. Finally, I add the finishing touches to bring the piece to life.
