Since starting my small business, I seem to be drawn to peonies. and created lots of items featuring them over the years. I have a made them in 3-D where I have sculpted the leather, I have also used the same leather marquetry technique as I have here, to create highly detailed motifs for corset belts. 
 
There’s something very elegant about the shape and form of a peony. I particularly like the shape of the petals and the flowing nature of their leaves. For inspiration for this piece I went back to my earlier sketchbooks, which were inspired by Chinese brush paintings. I love the movement and blocks of colour that you get from this style of painting, which I have tried to re-create in my work.
 
This particular Necklace is very detailed with lots of small pieces cut out by hand with a scalpel
before being meticulously fitted together like a jigsaw. Once all the leather pieces are assembled, I stitch them together using my trusty companion, 'Gerty', a 1960's Pfaff rolling-foot sewing machine. Finally, I add the finishing touches to bring the piece to life.
